What’s Next for Guillermo del Toro? Who Will Direct ‘The Hobbit?’

Yesterday the sad news broke of director Guillermo del Toro’s departure from The Hobbit. The internet has been a buzz since then, questioning his next move. There are countless projects he could jump on as either producer or director. There’s the obvious, but unlikely with Hellboy 3. Not to mention adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness (the one I’m hoping for), Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five, Dan Simmon’s Drood, Roald Dahl’s The Witches, and even updates of Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.

There’s even a list of projects he’s been interested in: DC Comics’ Deadman, Marvel’s Dr. Strange, Haters, Saturn and the End of Days, The Left Hand of Darkness, and a remake of the TV series The Champions.

Hit the jump to read details on the possibility of Peter Jackson (The Lord of The Rings trilogy, King Kong) taking over as director on The Hobbit.

“If that’s what I have to do to protect Warner Bros’ investment, then obviously that’s one angle which I’ll explore,” he said. “The other studios may not let me out of the contracts.”

Jackson told the NZ Dominion Post, to which Jackson’s manager downplayed to EW:

“That’s not something he can consider at this time as he has other commitments to other projects. But make no mistake, Peter and Fran’s commitment to the franchise is total and will do everything necessary to protect the films and the investment made by New Line, [parent company] Warner Bros. and MGM.”
