SECOND OPINION: Iron Man 2 (2010)

Check out Fred’s review for the plot summary of a very highly anticipated sequel to one of the best superhero movies. Continue reading for a second opinion review.

Review:

Iron Man 2 has been building itself up with hype, constant picture and trailer releases, and with all the comparisons to the first one, and let me tell you, it definitely didn’t even come close to doing it justice. I saw a lot of reviews saying that there wasn’t as much action as the first Iron Man, so I went in expecting a half-comedy, half boring drama about the superhero. That’s definitely not what it is. This review will NOT have any spoilers, so read away if you’d like to know what my opinion is of what it was before you see it.

The movie opens with voices, speaking both English and Russian, and a man in a house is shown. It’s revealed that an old man is laying in bed watching a news report about Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who is admitting that he is Iron Man. It’s then shown that Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) is caring for the man in the bed, who is revealed to be his father. His father passes away watching this news report, Ivan screams, and the scene cuts away. It’s a pretty basic, simple beginning to a movie and probably wouldn’t draw you in to see the movie if that was all you had to base your decision on.

It’s hard to even put the movie into words, because basically…it’s good. There isn’t much else to say specifically because everything about it works and is good together. But I want to start by talking about the characters and acting. As Fred said in his review, many of the characters were underplayed. I was dreading watching Scarlett Johansson as Natalie Rushman (Black Widow) in this movie, but she was one of the best parts of it. She not only looked amazing, but her character is sexy, and she plays the character perfectly. Johansson shows emotion well and makes you want to keep watching the scenes that she’s in. They write her character really well, too. Mickey Rourke, who is also amazing in this movie, looks really good comparably, but he is only a side note, when he should have been a main character in the movie. Robert Downey Jr. is his usual self, and all the other actors are good, but not really worth noting, except two. Gwyneth Paltrow and her character, Pepper, are both annoying and whiny, in my opinion. Luckily, she isn’t in it as much as I thought she’d be, so I didn’t have to put up with watching her for very long. On the complete opposite side on that, though, is Don Cheadle, who played Rhodey. Cheadle absolutely masters this character and everything that he is…so well, in fact, that you would think he was playing himself. He makes you forget that anyone else ever even played Rhodey. So, all in all, the characters and their actors were awesome.

One thing that I slightly disagree with Fred’s review on is that I think that all the fights in the movie are done well. They make you want to never stop watching, and they’re really cool. Fred covered the fight scenes really well in his review though, so I’m not going to go into any more detail about those. Just that they’re really, really good. Better than the first.

The main thing that will distinguish my opinion with Fred’s is that I found this movie hilarious. Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Samuel L. Jackson and the rest of the cast crack jokes that are said in a way that will keep you laughing throughout most of the movie. I think it’s done well, separating the action and comedy right where the need to be separated.

The design of the characters are much better than the first movie, too. The new suits are much better than the originals. They’re more creative, more like the original comic book designs, and much more fun to watch the characters in and even to watch them put on.

Overall, this is now one of my favorite movies. The humor, action, drama, characters, acting, and design all fit together to make this one of the best movies of the year. It’s definitely worth seeing no matter what type of movies you like. It’s good for guys and girls, and it’s not just another superhero movie. Compared to the first, it’s a million times better. It was worth the wait.
