Review:

After label issues, countless mixtapes, street singles, B.o.B.’s debut album finally drops next week. Originally planned for release on May 25th, 2010, the commercial success of the single “Nothin’ On You” shot the album to an early release of April 27th, 2010. Due to this change, B.o.B. released a mixtape titled May 25 in honor of the original release date.

Just as Kid Cudi’s Man on The Moon album did, I expect Bobby Ray to be declared a “new sound.” To be fair, it does somewhat deserve this title, but honestly, it’s nothing really groundbreaking or original in the hip-hop community. It’s more of a fresh sound in the mist of everything being released now-a-days.

The first track, “Don’t Let Me Fall” (also a single), is B.o.B.’s way of expressing his fear of losing his current status in the industry. The single “Nothin’ On You” is what it is. A catchy, not extremely creative single, but it does what it’s supposed to do and is bearable, unlike most hip-hop artists pop singles.

The Lupe Fiasco assisted “Past My Shades” is another high note like “Don’t Let Me Fall”, but to be fair, this is mainly due to Lupe. One of the most under-appreciated MC’s, Lupe glides over the beat with his witty-but-meaningful rhymes. I have a love-hate feeling towards “Airplanes”. While, I enjoy the track, it becomes dismissible after one listen to “Airplanes Pt. II” for one reason: Eminem. After listening to the sequel track and going back to the original it just feels empty. The fact that “Airplanes Pt. II” is the best cut on the entire album doesn’t help either.

I could sit here and review each and every track, but that would get tiresome for myself and you, the reader. Honestly, I enjoy the entire album. Including the bonus tracks. While B.o.B.’s lyrics aren’t the greatest thing I’ve ever heard, it’s obvious he will evolve as an artist. With co-signs from Lupe and Marshall Mathers and a phenomenal debut album it is obvious that Bobby Ray is here to stay.

Best Tracks:

  1. Don’t Let Me Fall
  2. Past My Shades f. Lupe Fiasco
  3. Ghost In The Machine
  4. 5th Dimension f. Ricco Barrino
  5. Airplanes Pt. II f. Eminem & Hayley Williams
  6. Satellite [Bonus Track]
  7. Letters from Vietnam [Bonus Track]

Forgettable Tracks:

  1. Nothin’ On You f. Bruno Mars
  2. Airplanes f. Hayley Williams
  3. Yesterday [Bonus Track]

PS: For those in search of the unreleased track, look no further.
